Dr. Samir Patel is a Philadelphia native who graduated with the Highest Honors from Penn State University. He completed his medical school training at Weill Cornell Medical College, where he was selected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. After a transitional year at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, Dr. Patel completed his ophthalmology residency and vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital.
Dr. Patel is Board Certified in Ophthalmology and is a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology, the Vit-Buckle Society, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and American Society of Retina Specialists. He is a scientific reviewer for several major ophthalmology journals including JAMA Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology, and RETINA. He also serves as an Assistant Editor to the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Global Ophthalmology Guide.
He is actively involved as an investigator in several major clinical trials and studies on age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, retinal detachment, and gene therapy. He has authored over 100 publications and textbook chapters on vitreoretinal diseases and has presented his research at conferences across the country.
Dr. Patel’s areas of interest include treatments for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic macular edema (DME), diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion (RVO), retinal imaging, retinopathy of prematurity, clinical trials, and innovative vitreoretinal surgical techniques.
