Dr. David Xu graduated magna cum laude from Duke University before attending the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine on a full-tuition scholarship, where he received a Distinction in Biomedical Research. He completed a research fellowship funded by the Research to Prevent Blindness fellowship. He completed a transitional year internship at Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Chicago, IL. Dr. Xu pursued his ophthalmology residency at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA in Los Angeles, CA, where he received the Pepose-Saltzman Young Investigator Award and the Starr E. Schulman Fellowship Award. He then completed fellowship training at Wills Eye Hospital and joined the faculty at Mid Atlantic Retina/Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals.
Dr. Xu is board-certified in Ophthalmology and serves as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. He is also a member of the Retina Service at Wills Eye Hospital. He actively contributes to the field as a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology (PAO), the New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology (NJAO), the Pennsylvania Medical Society (PAMED), and the Vit-Buckle Society (VBS). In recognition of his scientific contributions, he received the ASRS Honor Award in 2022.
He has contributed numerous peer-reviewed articles, textbook chapters, lectureships and editorials. His scientific works have been published in journals such as Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology Retina, American Journal of Ophthalmology, RETINA, among others, and he has contributed chapters to 10 ophthalmology textbooks. He serves on the editorial board for the journal RETINA and is a reviewer for more than 10 scientific journals. He has been an invited speaker to present at numerous national ophthalmic meetings. He founded EyeGuru, an educational online resource for beginning ophthalmology trainees.
Dr. Xu is dedicated to providing patients with the most advanced, evidence-based medical and surgical care. He has served as an investigator for more than 40 nationwide clinical trials, focusing on treatments for age-related macular degeneration, geographic atrophy, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, and uveitis.
