Dr. Richard Kaiser, MD is a Philadelphia native, a Board-Certified Ophthalmologist and a member of the Wills Eye Hospital medical staff and Retina Service since 2001.  Richard Kaiser received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his medical doctor degree from New York University School of Medicine, where he was awarded recognition for his ophthalmic research. He completed his medical internship at Presbyterian Hospital/University of Pennsylvania where he was honored as Intern of the Year.  Dr. Kaiser performed his Ophthalmology Residency at the University of Pennsylvania and Scheie Eye Institute where he was appointed Chief Resident.  He then completed his two-year vitreoretinal fellowship at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan, where he was awarded two prestigious national honors, the Heed Ophthalmic Fellowship Award and the Ronald G. Michels Retinal Fellowship Award.

Currently, Dr. Kaiser is a Professor of Ophthalmology at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, an Attending Surgeon at Wills Eye Hospital and is the Co-Director of the Wills Retina Fellowship Program.  Dr. Kaiser is a principle investigator of a novel clinical trial to advance retina surgery and co-investigator of several major international clinical trials investigating new forms of treatment for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and a variety of other retinal conditions.  He serves as an Assistant Editor for the Journal Retina, and is the Editor-in-Chief for New Retina MD.  Dr. Kaiser co-hosts the Retina Today Video Journal Club which has world-wide viewership.  He is an invited lecturer at numerous national and international ophthalmic meetings. Dr. Kaiser has authored numerous scientific publications and book chapters on retinal disease.  He is a past-president of the Ophthalmic Club of Philadelphia and a member of several international medical societies including the Retina Society and the Associated Society of Retina Surgeons.  He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology.  He has been the recipient of the Academy’s Achievement Award and the American Society of Retina Specialists Honor Award. Dr. Kaiser was named to “Top Doctors of Philadelphia” by Philadelphia Magazine and “Top Physicians of South Jersey” by South Jersey Magazine.

Dr. Kaiser maintains a wide-range of clinical interests including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusion, and interests in retina surgery including retinal detachment, macular hole, macular pucker, retinal vascular occlusion, and complications of diabetic retinopathy.
