Dr. Fischer retires after 40 years in retina

Following a long career of caring for his patients and treating retina diseases, Dr. Fischer retired on August 31, 2021. Dr. Fischer practiced as a retinal specialist for 40 years.

Dr. Fischer served as Co-Director of both the Retina Service and Uveitis Service at Wills Eye Hospital. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Uveitis Society, the Retina and Vitreous Societies, American Medical Society, International Association of Ocular Surgeons.

During his time with Mid Atlantic Retina, Dr. Fischer received the Distinguished Alumni Award from his alma mater and was named one of the “Top Docs” in Philadelphia Magazine, and “Best Docs in America”.

Upon his retirement, he was presented with the Wills Eye Cup, which is granted to honor special colleagues, friends and distinguished benefactors of Wills Eye Hospital. This specialty glass bowl was hand-made and mouth-blown for Wills Eye Hospital at the Simon Pearce glass studios in Vermont. The engraved artwork depicts the four locations occupied by Wills Eye Hospital since its founding in 1832 as the nation’s first medical institution devoted to care of the eyes.
